How to Prep Your Skin for Waxing: 6 Essential Steps

woman receiving a skin waxing treatment

A great wax starts before you arrive at the spa. A little preparation can help the wax grip the hair effectively and set the stage for a smoother, more comfortable experience.

The good news is that waxing preparation does not need to be complicated. Let your hair grow, exfoliate gently, keep your skin hydrated and know which products or treatments should be mentioned to your esthetician. Here is what to do before booking one of Bella Santé’s professional waxing services—and what to skip.

What Should You Do Before Waxing?

Before a waxing appointment, allow the hair to grow long enough for the wax to grip, exfoliate gently in advance and continue your normal moisturizing routine. On the day of your appointment, arrive with clean, product-free skin and let your esthetician know about any irritation, medications or active skincare products.

1. Check Your Skin Before Your Wax

Take a quick look at the area you plan to wax. Skin that is sunburned, broken, peeling or actively irritated needs time to recover before waxing.

If you have a mole, beauty mark, healing blemish or particularly sensitive area, point it out to your esthetician before the service begins. This allows them to work carefully around it and adjust the treatment when needed.

Not sure whether your skin is ready? Contact the spa before your appointment. It is always better to ask than to arrive and discover that the area needs more time to heal.

2. Let Your Hair Grow to the Right Length

It can be tempting to shave or trim before a wax, but the hair needs enough length for the wax to hold onto it.

For the wax to grip properly, hair should generally be at least one-quarter inch long. Hair that is too short may not lift cleanly, while hair that is significantly longer may make the service less comfortable.

If you are unsure whether your hair is the right length, avoid last-minute trimming. Leave it as it is and ask your esthetician whether any trimming is necessary.

3. Should You Exfoliate Before Waxing?

Yes—gentle exfoliation before waxing can help remove dead surface skin and release hairs that may be trapped underneath it. The key word is gentle.

Aggressive scrubbing can leave your skin tender before the wax even begins. You want the area to feel smooth and comfortable, not freshly polished within an inch of its life.

When Should You Exfoliate Before Waxing?

Exfoliate a day or two before your appointment rather than immediately beforehand. This gives your skin time to settle while still clearing away buildup that could get in the way of a smooth wax.

Skip exfoliation if the area is already irritated, sunburned or unusually sensitive.

How to Exfoliate Before Waxing

Use a soft washcloth or a mild exfoliating product that you already know works well for your skin. Massage the area lightly and avoid applying too much pressure.

This is not the time to experiment with a strong new scrub, peel or exfoliating acid. Keep your routine familiar and simple.

How to Exfoliate Your Legs Before Waxing

For a leg wax, gently exfoliate the full area one or two days beforehand, paying particular attention to spots where you tend to notice dry skin or ingrown hairs. Rinse well and follow with your usual light moisturizer.

4. Should You Moisturize Before Waxing?

Continue your normal moisturizing routine in the days before your appointment. Keeping your usual skincare routine consistent is generally better than introducing something new at the last minute.

On the day of your wax, however, arrive with clean skin and no heavy lotion, body oil or rich cream on the treatment area. A layer of product can make it harder for the wax to grip the hair properly.

Think hydrated skin before the appointment—not freshly buttered skin when you walk through the door.

5. Prepare for the Area Being Waxed

The same basic rules apply to most waxing services, but a little area-specific planning can make your appointment easier. Whenever possible, arrive with clean, dry skin and no heavy products on the treatment area.

How to Prepare for a Leg Wax

Allow the hair to reach the proper length, exfoliate gently in advance and avoid applying body lotion or oil immediately before your service. Loose pants, a skirt or another comfortable option can help minimize friction afterward.

How to Prepare for a Brazilian or Bikini Wax

Arrive with clean, product-free skin, allow the hair to grow and avoid intense exfoliation immediately before the appointment. Wear breathable, comfortable clothing and let your esthetician know about any irritation, ingrown hairs or sensitivity.

How to Prepare Your Face for Waxing

Facial skin can be especially sensitive, so tell your esthetician about any retinoids, exfoliating acids, acne treatments or recent facial procedures. Avoid waxing areas that are peeling, sunburned or irritated.

For precise facial hair removal, Bella Santé offers professional brow waxing and upper lip waxing at our Boston, Lexington and Wellesley locations.

6. Review Retinoids, Medications and Recent Treatments

Some skincare products, medications and professional treatments can make skin more delicate or reactive. This is particularly important when waxing the face.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends avoiding over-the-counter retinol and prescription topical retinoids for two to five days before facial waxing. If you use a prescription product, follow the instructions of the clinician who prescribed it and contact Bella Santé before your appointment if you are unsure.

Waxing should also be avoided while taking isotretinoin and for six months after stopping it because of the risk of skin injury and scarring. Do not stop or change a prescription medication without speaking with the clinician who prescribed it.

You should also tell your esthetician about recent chemical peels, laser treatments, microdermabrasion or other procedures that may have affected the skin. If you are coordinating waxing with a facial or another skincare service, review Bella Santé’s facial treatment menu and ask the team how to space your appointments appropriately.

What Should You Avoid Before Waxing?

A little restraint can be just as helpful as preparation. Before your appointment, avoid:

  • Shaving or trimming the hair too short
  • Scrubbing or exfoliating immediately before the wax
  • Applying heavy lotion, oil or body products to the area
  • Waxing over sunburned, broken, peeling or irritated skin
  • Trying a strong new skincare product shortly before your appointment
  • Leaving out information about retinoids, medications or recent skin treatments

Waxing Preparation FAQs

Should You Exfoliate Before Waxing?

Yes. Gentle exfoliation can remove dead surface skin and help release hairs that may be trapped underneath. Exfoliate a day or two before your appointment rather than scrubbing immediately beforehand.

When Should You Exfoliate Before Waxing?

Plan to exfoliate approximately one or two days before your wax. This gives your skin time to settle before the service. Skip exfoliation if the area is irritated, sunburned or unusually sensitive.

Should You Moisturize Before Waxing?

Continue your normal moisturizing routine in the days leading up to your wax, but avoid applying heavy lotion or oil to the treatment area immediately before the appointment.

Can You Put Lotion on Before Waxing?

It is best to arrive without a fresh layer of lotion on the area being waxed. Product residue may make it harder for the wax to grip the hair. Moisturize normally beforehand, then leave the skin clean and product-free on the day of your service.

How Long Should Hair Be Before Waxing?

Hair should generally be at least one-quarter inch long so the wax can grip it properly. If the hair is significantly longer, ask your esthetician whether it should be trimmed before your appointment.

Can You Wax While Using Retinol or Retin-A?

Topical retinoids can make facial skin more delicate. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends avoiding over-the-counter retinol and prescription topical retinoids for two to five days before facial waxing. Follow the instructions of your prescribing clinician and contact the spa before your appointment if you are unsure.

Can You Wax While Taking Isotretinoin?

No. Waxing should be avoided while taking isotretinoin and for six months after stopping it because of the risk of skin injury and scarring. Speak with the clinician who prescribed the medication before making any changes.

How Should You Prepare for a Brazilian Wax?

Allow the hair to grow, exfoliate gently in advance and arrive with clean, product-free skin. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and let your esthetician know about any irritation, sensitivity or ingrown hairs.

Can You Wax Sunburned or Irritated Skin?

No. Wait until sunburned, broken, peeling or inflamed skin has fully recovered before waxing. Contact the spa before your appointment if you are unsure whether the area is ready.
